THE MASTER KEYS · THE KYBALION (1908)
The 7 Hermetic Principles
"The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding." The immutable universal laws that govern consciousness, matter, and self-mastery.
PRINCIPLE I · THE ALL IS MIND
The Principle of Mentalism
"THE ALL is MIND; The Universe is Mental." — The Kybalion
The substantial reality underlying all outward manifestations—the physical universe, energy, and matter—is Mind. THE ALL creates the cosmos mentally, exactly as a human author creates a world in his imagination.
Practical Application: Stop viewing yourself as a helpless particle trapped in a cold mechanical machine. Because the universe is mental, Mental Transmutation is the supreme power capable of changing physical conditions.
Biblical Mirror: Proverbs 23:7 ("For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he") · Mark 11:24.
PRINCIPLE II · AS ABOVE, SO BELOW
The Principle of Correspondence
"As above, so below; as below, so above." — The Kybalion
There is an exact correspondence and harmony between the physical plane, the mental plane, and the spiritual plane. The microcosm (the inner human mind) mirrors the macrocosm (the cosmic architecture).
Practical Application: When your external circumstances are disordered, inspect your mental plane within. By bringing order, peace, and Ma'at to your thoughts ("Above"), your external reality ("Below") must conform.
Biblical Mirror: Matthew 6:10 ("Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven") · Matthew 18:18.
PRINCIPLE III · CEASELESS MOTION
The Principle of Vibration
"Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates." — The Kybalion
From pure Spirit down to the grossest stone, everything is in ceaseless motion. Differences in matter, energy, mind, and emotion arise solely from varying rates and frequencies of vibration.
Practical Application: Every thought and emotion carries a measurable frequency. By consciously adopting higher frequencies (gratitude, courage, purpose), you instantly raise your mental pitch above low-vibrational fear.
Biblical Mirror: Hebrews 11:3 ("things which are seen were not made of things which do appear").
PRINCIPLE IV · DUALITY OF DEGREE
The Principle of Polarity
"Everything is Dual; everything has poles; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree." — The Kybalion
Heat and cold are the exact same thing—differing only in degrees on the thermometer. In the identical manner, Love and Hate, Courage and Fear, Abundance and Scarcity are opposite poles of the same essence.
Practical Application: Do not waste energy battling negative states. You cannot transmute fear into water, but you can slide your attention along the scale to transmute Fear into Courage.
Biblical Mirror: Ecclesiastes 3:1–8 ("A time to love, and a time to hate").
PRINCIPLE V · THE PENDULUM SWING
The Principle of Rhythm
"Everything flows, out and in; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; rhythm compensates." — The Kybalion
Between the two poles established by Polarity, there is a rhythmic swing—manifesting in the tides of the ocean, economic cycles, and emotional mood swings.
Practical Application (The Law of Neutralization): While the pendulum cannot be destroyed, the master elevates consciousness to the higher plane ("I"). The backward swing of societal panic or depression passes harmlessly beneath your feet on the unconscious plane.
Biblical Mirror: Psalm 30:5 ("weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning").
PRINCIPLE VI · CAUSATION OVER CHANCE
The Principle of Cause and Effect
"Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; Chance is but a name for Law not recognized." — The Kybalion
Nothing escapes universal law. The masses are carried along as passive effects, obedient to environment, herd mentalities, and manipulative suggestion—moved like pawns on a chessboard. Masters become causers.
Practical Application: Refuse to live as an effect of circumstances. Step into conscious mental causation: choose the seeds of thought that will inevitable harvest as physical conditions.
Biblical Mirror: Galatians 6:7 ("for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap").
PRINCIPLE VII · GENERATIVE UNION
The Principle of Gender
"Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes." — The Kybalion
Far deeper than physical sex, Gender derives from the Latin genus (to generate). In consciousness, the Masculine Principle is the Conscious Mind / Will ("I"), while the Feminine Principle is the Subconscious Mind / Creative Receptivity ("Me").
Practical Application: Without the conscious masculine will standing as the "Watchman at the Gate," the receptive feminine subconscious is fertilized by manipulative commercial suggestions. Unite both in harmonious marriage.
Biblical Mirror: Genesis 1:27 · 2 Corinthians 10:5 ("bringing into captivity every thought").
